The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated on this Saturday, February 11th. The celebration was established in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to highlight gender inequality, with emphasis on the areas of Exact Sciences, Engineering and Computing, stimulating the training and participation of women in scientific and technological research.

At Vale, our women scientists work on various initiatives, such as reducing the need for water in ore processing, analysis of climate phenomena and protection of the Amazon. 

Since 2010, our company has fostered scientific research and shared knowledge in the area through the Vale Technological Institute – Sustainable Development, located in Belém (Pará state), and ITV (Vale Technologic Institute), in Ouro Preto and Santa Luzia (Minas Gerais state).

In addition, Vale understands that the presence of women is fundamental for a more egalitarian and sustainable future. That is why, in 2019, we committed to doubling the number of women in our company by 2025.
A Vale iniciou seu Programa de Descaracterização de barragens a montante em 2019. Desde então, das 30 estruturas previstas, 12 (nove em Minas Gerais e três no Pará) já foram eliminadas, o que equivale a 40% do total. A previsão da empresa é concluir a eliminação da 13ª estrutura neste ano. Metade das 18 estruturas que ainda serão eliminadas já tiveram as obras iniciadas.
A eliminação das estruturas a montante no Brasil é uma das principais ações da Vale para evitar que rompimentos como o de Brumadinho voltem a acontecer. As obras são complexas, trazem riscos e, por isso, as soluções são customizadas e estão sendo realizadas de forma cautelosa, tendo como prioridade, sempre, a segurança das pessoas, a redução dos riscos e os cuidados com o meio ambiente. 
 
Desde 2019, já foram investidos cerca de R$ 5,8 bilhões no Programa de Descaracterização da Vale. Somente em 2022, cinco estruturas foram completamente descaracterizadas. A eliminação de estruturas construídas a montante é um compromisso da Vale, além de atender às legislações federal e estadual vigentes sobre segurança de barragens. 
 
Todas as barragens a montante da Vale no Brasil estão inativas e são monitoradas permanentemente. As ações implementadas nessas estruturas são objeto de avaliação e acompanhamento pelas assessorias técnicas independentes, que fazem parte dos Termos de Compromisso firmados com os Ministérios Públicos Estadual e Federal, Fundação Estadual do Meio Ambiente (FEAM) e Estado de Minas Gerais.
