Commitment to safety and the environment

The safety of communities and the preservation of the environment are priorities for Vale. Therefore, since 2019, we have been conducting a program to eliminate all dams in Brazil built using the upstream raising method - a construction model that is no longer used by the company.

Schedule for Structures Undergoing De-characterization and yet to be De-characterized

Downstream Containment Structures (DSR)

As part of measures to enhance safety during the de-characterization of higher-risk dams, Vale built Downstream Containment Structures.

Between 2020 and 2022

We completed the construction of four DSRs in Minas Gerais: one for the Sul Superior Dam, in Gongo Soco; one for the Forquilha I, Forquilha II, Forquilha III and Grupo Dams, located between Ouro Preto and Itabirito; one for the B3/B4 Dam, in Nova Lima; and one for the Minervino and Cordão Nova dikes, part of the Pontal System, in Itabira.

In 2024

With the completion of the de-characterization of the B3/B4 dam in Nova Lima, the DSR that had been built was removed and the area was reintegrated into the environment.

In 2025

We will finalize the implementation of second DSR of the Pontal System, in Itabira, built to enable the de-characterization of the Minervino and Cordão Nova Vista Dikes.

B3/B4 – A Milestone in Dam De-characterization

The de-characterization of the B3/B4 dam, located at Mina de Mar Azul in Macacos (Nova Lima - MG), represented a historic milestone for Vale and for the safe management of dams in Brazil. In May 2024, the process of de-characterization of the structure was completed - the first dam built using the upstream method, which had been at the maximum emergency level (level 3) to be completely eliminated. The work was carried out using 100% autonomous equipment, operated remotely, guaranteeing zero risk to the operators throughout the entire project.

In compliance with the De-characterization State of Commitment signed with the main regulatory bodies and the Public Prosecutor's Office, Vale makes available monitoring reports on the execution of de-characterization works for its upstream dams.
