Engaging Stakeholders: PT Vale Outlines Strategic Plan to Update Post-Mining Document for Sustainability

Malili, November 25, 2025 – As part of its strategic commitment to responsible mine closure and long-term environmental sustainability, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale), a member of the MIND ID Group, is preparing to update its post-mining plan for the Sorowako Block.

The process began with a stakeholder consultation in Luwu Timur, held at the Sasana Praja Hall, Regent’s Office, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. This initial dialogue marks a key step toward transparency and collaboration in revising the post-mining document.

The session was attended by Acting Regional Secretary of Luwu Timur, Ramadhan Pirade, PT Vale’s management team, sub-district heads from Nuha, Towuti, Wasuponda, and Malili, village representatives, community members, and technical stakeholders.

Andri Ardiansyah, Specialist for Biodiversity and Mine Closure at PT Vale, explained that the update aligns with the company’s strategic plan to reinforce its sustainability commitments.

“The previous document was based on permits valid until 2025. PT Vale has now secured an extension until 2035 under a new Special Mining Business License (IUPK), which requires the post-mining plan to be revised accordingly,” he said.

The extended license means mining operations will continue until 2035, impacting land development projections, reclamation processes, and remaining open areas. The post-mining plan goes beyond ceasing operations—it includes land rehabilitation, environmental management, dismantling unnecessary facilities, and ongoing monitoring.

“This is an initial consultation. The document is yet to be drafted, and we want to capture input from government and communities before moving forward,” Andri emphasized.

Stakeholders used the forum to voice aspirations, including strengthening CSR programs, ensuring environmental data transparency, ecosystem restoration, and creating post-mining economic opportunities for local communities.

In line with PT Vale’s values, all feedback will be documented and incorporated into the revised post-mining plan, which will be submitted to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Responding to the consultation, Acting Regional Secretary Ramadhan Pirade encouraged collective support for PT Vale’s agenda: “PT Vale is part of our community and contributes significantly to Luwu Timur’s development. We must safeguard this partnership,” he said, drawing applause from attendees.

The transition from a Contract of Work to an IUPK license on May 3, 2024, introduced new obligations, including tax schemes, revenue sharing, and profit-sharing mechanisms. “The IUPK framework ensures that regional governments receive a share of PT Vale’s net profits. This is an important point for all stakeholders to understand,” Ramadhan added.

This initial consultation underscores PT Vale’s commitment to ensuring that every stage of its mining operations delivers long-term benefits for the environment and surrounding communities—even after mining activities conclude.
