Maravilhas III Dam: April 2026 Updates
The Maravilhas III Dam, located in Nova Lima, maintained adequate conservation conditions during April 2026, with a positive Stability Condition Declaration (DCE) and no active alert or emergency level for the structure.
Geotechnical performance in April 2026
The Geotechnical Performance Assessment Report for April 2026 was prepared by the Engineer of Record (EoR), an external company hired by Vale to conduct an independent evaluation of the structure. According to the report, based on data obtained through continuous monitoring and periodic visual inspections, the dam is performing within normal conditions.
The geotechnical instruments are operating within the expected parameters according to the hydrological cycle, and the safety factors obtained from the stability analyses meet the minimum requirements established by current legislation.
Second-stage construction works resumed
In April 2026, construction works for the second stage of the Maravilhas III Dam embankment resumed, including the execution of compacted fill and the installation of abutment contact drains. This stage represents the continuation of a project designed in two phases, using the downstream construction method.
People’s safety, risk reduction, and environmental protection remain absolute priorities throughout all phases of the works.
Continuous monitoring
The Maravilhas III Dam is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by Vale’s Geotechnical Monitoring Center (GMC). Monitoring combines automated geotechnical instrumentation with associated control levels and real-time visibility of the structure.
What changed compared to March 2026
In March, preparatory activities for the second stage began. In April, the construction works were effectively resumed with the execution of compacted fill and the installation of abutment contact drains.
